As I mentioned… if you did not touch any theme files from the parent theme, and you are using a child theme, then yes, you can update the parent theme without losing your child theme modifications. But as I said also, make sure you use a backup plugin to make backups for those unexpected events 🙂
Updating the theme is done by FTP because if you did it from the admin side, then you would potentially lose stuff.
