I am having trouble installing the child themes. Whether I install via FTP or through the WordPress theme installer I keep getting an error saying the parent theme could not be found.
I know I have the most recent versions because I just downloaded them again thinking that might be the problem. It’s not working for any of the themes.
Are the pro parent themes named such? If so, are the child themes different for pro and free versions? In other words if I go in and change the child CSS to celestial-pro for example will that work?
The only one that changed is the Celestial Reloaded theme from that of the Celestial Pro. Celestial Reloaded now looks for “celestial” whereas the Pro (older) looks for “st_celestial”.
Which theme are you using?
Hm, okay. Well, I was trying to load all of them because I haven’t decided which I want to use yet. Thought I’d play a little with each one and pick the one that works best.
This is the exact error I get: The parent theme could not be found. You will need to install the parent theme, preference, before you can use this child theme.
Preference Pro is activated, version 1.5.0 downloaded today. The child theme I’m trying to upload is the one that I downloaded with the above theme version. I do see the Theme Name in the Preference Pro stylesheet is Preference Pro. In the Preference Child stylesheet the template is identified as only preference. Assuming they aren’t different I could just change the template name. But I wanted to check to see if there was a difference in the child theme between the free and pro versions.
I’m sure it’s something I’m doing wrong, I just can’t figure what. I’ve done this before with your themes and it worked. It must be a Monday today. 🙂
I’m just heading out the door for a bit, but will come back to this and will definitely help you out and to also make sure I did not mess up the child theme(s). Back soon.
For Preference, the folder is named “preference”, so when you install the child theme for that, it looks for the parent theme which is the “preference’ folder. So this one should be working, or is it still not finding it?
There is a difference with the free and pro version, so you want to make sure that the child theme for Preference (not the Lite version) is installed if you install (or installed) the child theme for that one. If you are using the Preference Lite theme, then the child theme for that will look for “preference-lite”. The child theme for Preference Lite is found in the theme files in a folder named “child-theme”.
Still says the parent theme is missing. I’ve deleted and re-installed all of the child themes. Should I delete and re-install the parent themes again?
If you’re not going to lose anything you did sure. But if it still continues, contact me with your login info and I will take a look because something is not quite right then.
Okay well, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling this morning and all works fine. I DID delete directories via FTP. (I think possibly the previous version’s files weren’t all deleted previously and when I installed the update maybe all was not overwritten.) Then I reinstalled using the WordPress theme upload. Is that what made it work this time? Probably not, but at least it does work now. I really have no logical explanation as to why it didn’t work the last several times I tried and it does work today…I’m going to pretend it was a Monday curse. 🙂
Word to the wise if anyone else has this trouble. I did lose all customization I had done to the theme, but since this is a new site and I am only beginning content development and design customization it wasn’t much of a loss for me.
As always, I absolutely LOVE Styled Themes! Not only very cool designs, but the best support there is. Thank you so much!
Glad it worked out…sometimes things will just suddenly correct themselves without knowing what did it. But, the important part is that it’s working for you. Thanks for the great comment too 🙂
