MemberI was trying to add my own photo instead of the default photo for Encounters and it didn’t quite look right. The boxes of colour around the Showcase photo were not the right size for my photo. I don’t know what happened then but the whole Showcase area is now completely gone from my website. How do I bring it back?

ModeratorThere’s a few ways of adding images there…first is the custom header found under Appearance >> Header.
The other is using the Showcase widget position which usually means adding a photo to a text widget.
The banner widget position is styled differently and this one will show up on other pages, but it won’t show until a photo is added via a widget. With either the first or second one, you will get those outer boxes showing again which only show when something is there. The WP header one has a button on the page to restore the default image labeled as “Restore Original Header Image”.

MemberThanks but I Tried the “restore original header image” and nothing shows up there. It’s as if the whole banner area is just gone.

ModeratorCould you contact me and send me login details for your admin? I will take a look and see what is happening. If so, I will probably use a sample photo, so hopefully that is ok to test out.

ModeratorThanks for the login details…I know what the issue is and it’s related to the Advanced Text Widget; now I remember why I don’t use it anymore. When it’s used in a widget position, on other pages, it affects other pages that have that same position and even though it does not display a widget, it has a bug making it seem like there is. Complicated I know, but the long story short, is that I have your header back again.
- I removed your Advanced Text Widget that had your Google map and put the map into a text widget.
- I then installed a plugin called Dynamic Widgets which lets you publish widgets where you want…similar to the Advanced text widget, but way better. So with this, it adds a “Static” or “Dynamic” link at the bottom of every widget (in the admin) that lets you set what pages to show it on.
- I also installed a plugin called “Remove Widget Titles” which lets you hide widget titles by simply adding an exclamation mark ! just before the title begins in the widget. I used this to hide the text widget title for your map.
Now your front page default header is back and everything is functional 100%

MemberThank you very much. It looks great now that it’s back to normal. 🙂
I remember now that the header image disappeared after I followed the Contact Page tutorial and installed the Advanced Text Widget.
I am very grateful for your help with this matter Andre.

Moderatoryou’re very welcome… probably best not to use the Advanced text widget; instead use the dynamic widgets plugin for assigning widgets to select pages.
Cheers!January 24, 2014 at 9:42 am #19034Sarah McDowell
MemberI took your advice and removed the Advanced Text Widget. Perhaps you should make a note at the Encounters Videos that you don’t use it anymore.
I just watched your recommended plugins for Celestial tutorial and I see that you no longer recommend the Advanced Text Widget. I wrote down the names of all the plugins you recommended in the Celestial tutorial. Would they all also work for Encounters?

ModeratorAbsolutely…. as for the Encounters videos, I plan on remaking a lot of them due to the audio issue, but also some updates needed, such as the Advanced Text Widget.

MemberI’m not sure if I should start a new post or continue in this one. What I want to do now that I’ve resolved the issue about the disappearing header, is to use my own photo instead of the default one. Unfortunately, it’s not as wide as the one you use for a default photo.
Is there any way to center my photo in the showcase area and adjust the shaded coloured areas surrounding the default photo so that my photo can go there?

ModeratorI did not see what version of Encounters you have but the showcase area should now center images. For the surrounding area colours, the theme options have settings for that under the Header Image tab.

MemberI have the latest version but the photo is not centered when I added my own photo.
