I’m sorry, I don’t think I’ve heard of metaslider. I was trying to just use the standard header image (set in Customize -> Header Image -> Current Header) but it never seemed to be able to figure out the correct size. I finally gave up and switched to using widgetkit for a single slide. Seems like a lot of overhead for a simple image display. But I hope to add a slider of images in the future – once I can find and edit a bunch to a long narrow horizontal size. I’m still getting a small strip of the header image below the slider, but I changed it to a color that matched my site’s scheme for now and it looks ok. Widgetkit does seem a bit sketchy in regards to sizing.
The Header image size defined in the customizer was a bug and already fixed in the new version. It displays the header bar on the theme.
It’s good to use widgetkit, and if you found something uncomfortable about the widgetkit you can view the tutorials regarding it.
